The Apricot Co Interim Board, in conjunction with Summerfruit NZ and Plant & Food Research, will be holding regional grower field walks (and tastings) of the Nzsummer2 and Nzsummer3 apricots over the next few weeks.
The first event will be in Hawke’s Bay on Tuesday, 28 January from 4pm at The Orchard, 820 Main North Road, Bay View. All growers are encouraged to attend. An additional Hawke's Bay event and a Central Otago field walk are being planned and will be announced once dates and details are confirmed.
During the Hawke’s Bay field walk representatives from the ACIB, Plant & Food Research and Roger Brownlie (as a trial grower) will share their knowledge and experiences with local growers.
These events will provide growers with the latest information and an opportunity to taste the fruit for themselves. The aim is to encourage growers to invest in these first varieties from the Summerfruit NZ/PFR joint breeding programme ready for commercial release.
The Nzsummer series is planned to be the first of a series of new apricots with more to follow from the new variety’s evaluation programme.
Stephen Darling, ACIB chair says ‘this is an exciting time with an opportunity to achieve much needed improvement in fruit returns back to growers. The ACIB’s intention, in commercialising varieties from the joint breeding programme, is to assist in creating an increasingly profitable and vibrant new apricot industry. There are few other apricots in the world that harvest across this time period when the international market is largely unsupplied with apricots. The size of the market opportunity is yet to be defined.’
