New world record cherry weight to beat

In the spirit of 'anything the rest of the world can do New Zealand can do better' Kiwi cherry growers are challenged to beat the heaviest cherry world record, recently set by a couple of Italian growers.

The world-beating cherry weighed in at 33.05g, beating the previous record of 26.45g, and was grown by the Rosso brothers from Pecetto Torinese in Piedmont; a region renowned for its cherries. No information regarding the cherry variety has been released except for its description as a 'sweet carmen cherry'.

While the Piedmont region experienced a poor season this year with bad weather causing losses, Italy remains the European Union's main cherry producer with nearly 30,000ha planted.
